I specialise in humorous, idea-centric 2D animation direction and illustration.
My best-known work is the Dumb Ways to Die campaign. I like to think that project embodies my approach: silliness in service of serious ideas, visual economy, funny (rather than ad-funny), and full of the little characterful moments that make something worth watching twice. That work made me the 3rd most awarded commercial director in the world in 2013.
My basic process is: start with a good idea > think strategically about the best narrative approach and visual style for the idea > execute with maximum craft.
I work with ad agencies and clients on projects of all sizes, from multi-spot TV campaigns to bite-size social content. Having been an ad agency creative and a production company CD, I can help out from the beginning of the process, if you like.
I live in Melbourne and work with people all over the world. If you want to make something very good together please say hi at julian@julianfrost.co.nz.
